Essentia Health Australia offers a month long retreat for individuals and their families seeking a more intense treatment program for their loved ones with extreme emotion dysregulation and/or a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder at the Daintree Clinic. Using Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) as a guide, our program is led by CEO, Peter King who has gathered a team of mental health professionals and life-style specialists to offer Australia’s only intensive DBT retreat program from our Far North Queensland beach front location at the Daintree Clinic! The Daintree Clinic offers all the modern comforts and luxuries with 2 ensuite rooms and 2 rooms with a shared bathroom available.

Intensive Support
So intensive and personalised is our service that only 4 participants are accepted for each 28 day program. During the 28 days our participants attend 20 group sessions and 10 individual counselling sessions with our therapists who are intensively trained in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and Safe Trauma Therapy approaches. In addition, an activity program which includes personal trainers, daily yoga, financial planning, environmental, cultural and adventure activities as well as an array of cooking class experiences that are all aimed at health lifestyle during and following our 28 day retreat. Although participants are taught to be independent and responsible for their actions, our mental health nurse is on call 24 hours a day.

Assessment
Applicants are screened by our team in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast or Perth to ensure retreat attendees complement each other and are grouped in a way that the recovery needs of all attendees are considered! Our retreats are held as single gender retreats with no exceptions. Assessment begins with a referral by a GP or Psychiatrist and then our senior intake clinician will assess an individual’s suitability to enter our retreat at the Daintree Clinic. Our initial assessment will seek to generate a treatment plan, set goals and provide other recommendations to assist the management a mentally healthy lifestyle which strives toward optimal health and wellbeing. The initial assessment will then be reviewed by our team before an individual is accepted into the Daintree Clinic retreat program.

Ongoing support
The support does not end once the retreat has concluded! Essentia’s clinics in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast ensure that support is also available once the 28 days have concluded. Our clinics offer further Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) treatment programs as well as safe trauma therapy based approaches once an individual has achieved a state of safety and stability.

Family & Significant Others Involvement
We recognise the importance of family and significant others in the lives of individuals seeking functional recovery from extreme emotion dysregulation and/or a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. Essential to our program is the involvement of significant people in the lives of the people we seek to support. Our program requires that an individual attending the Daintree Clinic retreat has two significant supports visit in the middle weekend and on graduation during the final weekend of the retreat. During the key supporters visits, group programs, family sessions and day trips are scheduled to make the most of the opportunity to enhance healthy bonds between significant supporters and their loved one attending the retreat.

Why Far North Queensland?
There are many advantages to providing our retreat program in Australia. We had originally considered tropical locations in Thailand, Bali and Singapore to aide the recovery of individuals with extreme emotion dysregulation and/or a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. Though our research and site visits we became concerned with judicial systems which use corporal punishment and the difficulty with language barriers within foreign countries. So we made a conscious decision to partner with people we know and have available the safety of knowing our participants can access, if needed, a health system which is considered to be one of the best in the world! Our decision to partner in Australia was a simple one.
